Accessibility

Accessibility is about providing web sites and online learning materials which do not place barriers in the way of users with learning difficulties or other conditions such as sight impairment. The Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (2001), commonly known as SENDA, is an extension of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. It establishes legal rights for disabled students in the UK and states that it is unlawful for educational providers or institutions to treat disabled persons ‘less favourably’ than they would treat non-disabled persons for a reason relating to the person’s disability. The Act also states that disabled persons should not be put at a ‘substantial disadvantage’ when accessing learning materials.

It is important to bear this Act in mind when creating and delivering online learning materials. The following resources will help you become aware of the key issues and provide tips on building your online materials so they are accessible to all.

  • The Accessible Curriculum @ Stirling
Considers the ‘Accessible Curriculum’ and offers an overarching three stage approach, to providing the academic community with points of good practice regarding the design and delivery of academic modules of study.
