WebCT is the University of Stirling's chosen Managed Learning Environment (MLE). CeLD provides support and training for staff wishing to develop online courses using WebCT through a number of training courses. The dates of all such training courses are advertised on the Training section of the web site.
Currently, CeLD staff are rewriting all the training materials ready for the upgrade to WebCT Campus Edition 6. Links to updated documentation will appear here shortly.
CeLD's Introduction to WebCT course covers the basic elements of constructing and developing a WebCT course here at the University of Stirling. An overview of WebCT is given as an introduction and then the rationale and use of course templates is outlined before participants have the chance to build course materials in a hands-on session. The session covers the basic upload of course materials.
This course introduces the use of the Assessments Tool in WebCT to collect course feedback. Participants are shown how to build a survey by selecting questions, and also how to add, remove and edit questions within a survey. An overview is also given of the Question Database in WebCT, with an explanation of how to add, remove and edit questions in the Question Database. Participants are also shown how to view and interpret the survey results in WebCT and how to export the survey results for use in other packages.
The aim of this course is to enhance understanding of the range and uses of the Communications Tools in WebCT. It looks in particular at the Discussions Tool, the Calendar Tool and the Chat Tool as these are the most popularly used of the communication tools in WebCT. As well as exploring the differences between asynchronous and synchronous discussion and showing the full features of these tools, the course also seeks to promote ideas of how these tools may be used to develop online activities and how these activities may be managed in each tool.
This course introduces the Student Database which is included in every WebCT course, the My Grades tool, and the Selective Release mechanism. The Student Database lists the students that have access to that WebCT course and can be used to store additional information about those students, such as cohort or tutorial group membership, or assignment and exam grades. Selected information from this database can be made available to individual students using the My Grades tool, so that students only see the data that relates to them (ideal for distributing assignment and exam grades), and the Selective Release mechanism enables WebCT tools or materials to be made available to specific subsets of students (e.g. different cohorts), or released at specific times or for specific periods. Whilst this course is relevant for all staff, staff wishing to manage different groups of students within the same WebCT course (such as a WebCT site supporting an MSc) may find it particularly useful.
The Learning Module Tool can be used to deliver a number of pages of content, usually HTML, within a WebCT course. This training course will provide participants with the necessary practical skills to be able to add, edit and manage the Learning Module Tool in WebCT. By the end of the session, course participants will be able to organise pages of their WebCT course content into a Table of Contents, providing the students with a guide to the sequence of study for the content.
CeLD is happy to provide customised WebCT training courses for staff from a department if there is a requirement for this. This training could be customised to show the use and development of the relevant departmental WebCT course template. If you would like to arrange such a training course for staff in your area, please contact the relevant Faculty Support member of CeLD. See the CeLD Staff page for more details of roles within CeLD.
There is also a selection of self-paced materials available to help you find out about developing courses in WebCT from the Information Services WebCT page. This web site includes a wide range of documentation on developing courses in WebCT at the University of Stirling.
