Service terms and conditions

Connection to the university CampusNet is provided to staff and students subject to the following conditions:

CampusNet access is provided primarily in support of academic work. The following Stirling University services are provided in support of research and teaching and are therefore fully supported by Information Services:

the university websites, the Portal and linked resources, WebCT, staff and student webmail.

Traffic on CampusNet is controlled for security reasons. Only http and https traffic is permitted.

The following uses are strictly prohibited:

Music sharing and downloading : sharing your music with other users on the network is prohibited as your computer broadcasts the music on the network. This can overwhelm the network equipment, slowing down or preventing other users' access. iTunes is known to cause this problem. Music downloading is explicity forbidden under the IT Use Policy. How to switch off music sharing in iTunes.

Online game playing: this activity is also known to use up excessive bandwidth and reduce performance of the network for other users. It is also explicitly forbidden under the IT Use Policy.

Use of the IPX protocol: for the legitimate purposes for which we provide the CampusNet service, there is absolutely no need to run the IPX protocol. If we suspect that your computer is causing a problem and find it is using IPX we will expect you to remove it. If your computer has previously been used on a different network eg home or office, then it may be configured for IPX. Instructions for disabling IPX .

The following uses are allowed but not supported by Information Services:

Chat and messaging services eg MSN Messenger

VOIP services eg Skype

IS is not sufficiently resourced to support these uses, however, as long as they do not have any negative impact on the network service for other users, we allow them. We encourage users to share configuration information with us (for the purpose of disseminating to other CampusNet users) and to other users. See our chat/VOIP page.

All use of CampusNet is subject to the IS Regulations (see detail). IS has the right to disconnect without notice, any user who is found to be in breach of these regulations.

In addition to the above, by running the CampusNet setup utility users implicitly agree:

that the University may install software on their computers

to remove licensed software from their computer when they cease to be a member (staff or student) of the University
