Photocopying and Scanning: Copyright

If you have a specific question it may already have been answered by our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.

There are strict limits on what you may legally copy, to protect the rights of both author and publisher.

Copying is permitted for academic (not commercial) research or private study, usually the maximum allowed is a single copy of up to one article from any one issue of a journal, and up to 5% or one chapter of a book. However there are many exceptions to this general guideline - click here for the full guidelines.

Copying is also legal when it is done with the expression permission of the copyright holder. Assistance in tracking down copyright holders is available from The WATCH File (Writers, Artists and Their Copyright Holders).

Note that if you break copyright law YOU could be sued for damages. You would also be in breach of the university's regulations and subject to disciplinary action.

If you require any advice or help with copyright queries please contact David Gardiner, Team Manager, Library and IT Enquiry Services, The Library by email d.j.gardiner@stir.ac.uk or by phone extension no. 7221.
