Students of Stirling University

Students are automatically given library membership on registration. Your registration card serves as your Library card and should be brought with you to the Lending desk when you wish to take books out.

Staff of Stirling University

Staff should request a staff card from Human Resources. You should bring this to the Lending Services desk in the Library along with a passport size photo (there is a photo machine near the campus supermarket). At this point, you will be entered on the system and can start borrowing.

Short term attached staff
Can also borrow from the Library, following completion of this form by your Head of Department. Please bring the completed form and a passport size photo to the Lending Services desk.

Supervisors of nursing placement students

Associate membership of the university library is available to current supervisors of Stirling students on placement, who are employees of the following NHS trusts:

  • Forth Valley Primary Care NHS Trust
  • Forth Valley Acute Hospitals NHS Trust
  • and of other organisations with current supervisors

You will be asked to complete a registration form, available from the Lending Services Desk in the Library. This should be returned to Lending Services with a standard letter of authorisation from the relevant Trust, or from the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, and with a passport-sized photograph. Letters of authorisation should be returned within 3 months. A letter of authorisation is valid for 3 months only from the date it is signed. A Library card will be issued, valid for one year at a time.

Associate members may also use our Document Delivery Service to request loans and photocopies of items not in the Library's stock. The library is charged for this service and this charge is passed on to the user. Charges currently vary, depending on the supplier, and whether it is for a loan or photocopy, at somewhere between £2.00 and £20.20. Contact DDS for price details. Request forms are available at the DDS desk.

Electronic information: Associate members are advised to use the NHS e-library , which provides a variety of databases and full text electronic journals. An Athens account is required to access these resources - this can be acquired from the NHS web site under 'Register'.

Visitors to the Library

The University is happy to share its considerable resources with those in the surrounding area who can benefit from them.

Access for the public : any member of the local community is welcome to use the library for reference purposes. No formal application is required except for access to the special collections. If you wish to borrow, this can be done by joining the library as an External reader. Please ask at the Lending Services desk on Level 2 of our Library. Please note that during an extensive refurbishment of the Library many of the books will be in secure storage, and it will therefore not be possible to offer this service from June 2009 until the Library re-opens in August 2010. We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

Access for students from other universities : students from other universities may use the library for reference purposes. No formal application is required except for access to the special collections. Part time undergraduate and taught postgraduate students from other institutions, can apply to their own university library for a SCONUL Access card - this will permit borrowing at our Library free of charge. Your Library must be part of SCONUL Access. Otherwise, if you wish to borrow, this can be done by joining the library as an External reader. Please see 'Joining' below.

Access for staff from other universities: staff from other HE institutions can apply for a SCONUL Access card from your home library. This will permit borrowing at our Library. Please bring your SCONUL Access card to our Lending Services Desk.

Access for 6th year pupils and Forth Valley College students: school pupils in their sixth year at local schools and Forth Valley College students may apply for External membership at no cost. Please contact Lending Services for details. Other School pupils may use the library for reference only. Please note that during an extensive refurbishment of the Library many of the books will be in secure storage, and it will therefore not be possible to offer this service from June 2009 until the Library re-opens in August 2010. We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

Joining
External readers who wish to borrow may do so on payment of an annual subscription of £30 (£15 to Stirling University Graduates). The fee is waived for those with SCONUL Access membership cards, for sixth year school pupils and Forth Valley College students.

Borrowers may register at the Lending Services Desk between 9am & 7pm Monday to Thursday and 9am & 5 pm Friday. You should provide a passport-size photograph in order to obtain a library card. Cards are normally available on registration, or they can be posted if required.

Stirling Alumni

Alumni of Stirling University are entitled to join the Library under the same conditions as External members. The annual membership cost is halved to £15. Please note that during an extensive refurbishment of the Library many of the books will be in secure storage, and it will therefore not be possible to offer this service from June 2009 until the Library re-opens in August 2010. We are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.
