About the IP Telephony System

5320 phoneAfter over 20 years of using the current analogue telephone system, the University of Stirling has upgraded their system to Voice-Over-IP (VOIP). Instead of using our old system of circuits switched by PBX (Private Branch Exchange), VOIP bypasses the need for this traditional telephony hardware by using the existing data network to transmit calls via Internet Protocol (IP).
With the introduction of VOIP at Stirling, also introduces many new benefits and features to staff., which include:

  • Better, more consistent call quality.
  • A greater capacity for expansion.
  • Voicemail available on request
  • Easier access to information and greater flexibility
  • More advanced features and software integration

After a competitive tendering process, the University have purchased the MITEL IP Telephony system. Mitel is one of the leading telecommunications companies and their systems are used by a number of other Universities including Aberdeen, Warwick and Keele.
The ‘go live’ date for the switchover to VOIP is 26th March 2011 and all staff should start using their new phones after this date.  This Telecoms section will remain with further information to assist you with our new system.

  • Documentation and Training-Our standard documentation including 'quick start' guides and further training material.
  • Troubleshooting and FAQS-If you are having a problem with your VOIP telephone, this is your first point of reference.
  • Logging a fault or new extension request -If the troubleshooting section cannot assist, here you will find detail of how to report a problem with your phone, or how to request a new extension and phone for a new member of staff.
