After over 20 years of using the current analogue telephone system, the University of Stirling has upgraded their system to Voice-Over-IP (VOIP). Instead of using our old system of circuits switched by PBX (Private Branch Exchange), VOIP bypasses the need for this traditional telephony hardware by using the existing data network to transmit calls via Internet Protocol (IP).

After a competitive tendering process, the University have purchased the MITEL IP Telephony system. Mitel is one of the leading telecommunications companies and their systems are used by a number of other Universities including Aberdeen, Warwick and Keele.
The ‘go live’ date for the switchover to VOIP is 26th March 2011 and all staff should start using their new phones after this date. This Telecoms section will remain with further information to assist you with our new system.
